When I am with used trawler buyers, one of the things I stress to my customers is to like the boat you are buying; do not buy based upon the price alone or you will be selling it within 6 months. But buying a boat is usually a compromise; rarely does a boat have everything on it you wish it had.
Almost always, after the purchase, a buyer will upgrade his new trawler or motor yacht with new electronics, canvas, curtains and other things; the boat will take on the owners personality and tastes.
We have been at this for almost 9 years now with our trawler, the Patricia Ann; changes have been made to her based upon necessity or just wanting to get a new look.
As with most sundeck trawler owners, the sundeck is the place on the boat where we spend the most time. We entertain here, eat our meals here and just plain hang out here. We recently turned the Patricia Ann around with her stern to the west to make docking a bit simpler. In doing so, exposed the open sundeck to the hot afternoon sun.
So I called Matt, my canvas maker and asked him if he had any ideas on how we could shade the area and still allow us to watch the boats as they slid by on the Intracoastal Waterway. He had the solution. He recommended a product called Soltis 86. It is a woven synthetic fabric that blocks 86% of the sun's rays.

So Matt and Amy, the owners of Topstich, fabricated twin roll-up curtains that overlap the existing canvas and strataglass on the inside. The Solis can be lowered or raised and does not interfere with the ventilation when the isinglass is raised.
In the photo you can see the results and it really works! They also look terrific.
If you are in the Fernandina Beach, FL area and wish to have Matt and Amy build shade curtains for you trawler, give them a call at 904/491-9979.
