Well good morning to everyone; well for some of you it might well be well past noon your time. According to my site statistics we have been getting visitors recently from Europe and Asia.
Yesterday we removed the circulation water pump on the port Volvo diesel engine in our trawler. A few weeks back we were preparing for a cruise and the pump locked up for some reason before we left the dock. I got it unlocked but after careful consideration, we decided to trouble shoot the problem and repair it. We concluded that a bearing must be going bad. So $954.00 later we had a new pump in hand.

Yesterday we removed the old pump and I chose to clean up the engine and do a little touch of painting before installing a new pump. In doing so I placed my finger inside a 1 inch opening the engine block and lo and behold, I found a screw.
What is that all about I wondered? Locked up pump, screw inside engine cooling system, was there a connection?
Further investigation found a chip on the pump's impeller where the screw had become wedged "freezing" the pump. That screw had been circulating through my engine for over a year and finally was in the wrong place at the right time.
Now if you do not remember, we serviced the entire cooling systems last year on both engines. And I do remember loosing a screw that bolts the thermostat housing to the engine. And here it is.
So we found the final problem with the pump but will install the new one today and keep the old one as a spare.
I have to laugh almost as it is a good ending to a bad problem that would have always been we us. By the way, if you want to see how we serviced the cooling system, you can read about it at servicing your trawler cooler system.
Oh and be sure to not loose any screws...:)
