Selecting a Marine Surveyor

You have gone and found what appears to be just the perfect trawler. But is she really free from any problems?

Buying a used trawler, motor yacht or cruiser is always a stressful process with offers and counter-offers, sea trials, documentation and choosing the best insurance. But once a potential boat is located, a marine survey is always recommended to make sure you are getting what you are paying for and there are no hidden surprises.

But anyone can hang his shingle out as a Marine Surveyor; there are no laws governing or restricting their operations. So how do you choose a surveyor to check out your “new" used boat?

For starters, if you are working with a reputable Yacht Broker such as myself, he will guide you through the process. That is one of the advantages of buying your boat through a Broker.

I know several certified marine surveyors that I will recommend as I have had had experience with them in the past and I know their capabilities. I will not choose one for you however, as I do not want any suggestion of a conflict of interest. The surveyor works for you!
