Memorial Day Cruise

On the hook for a beautiful sunrise at Cumberland Island to start a great Memorial Day. We'll be on the hook for 4 days, exploring and gunk holing around the area. The full moon was spectacular this morning.

A salute goes out to our fallen warriors.

We are on island time today. All chores done; time for a beer at 9:30, lunch will be served at 11:00 or so.

We've now been on the hook for 3 days. We've toured the island again looking for those white deer with no luck. We have met some other trawler cruisers and given them a quick tour of the island too. The weather has been perfect.

A 1930s vintage mahogany motor yacht, Freedom, pulled into the are yesterday; it has been restored completely. She is here as part of a wedding this weekend for one of the Carnegie clan. I know of her from her sister-ship, the Enticer. We met her Captain a year ago and he gave us the low down on both. They spend about
a $1000,000.00 a year just to maintain the brightwork.

There are 16 boats in the anchorage today. Life is good.

Oh we found out on Monday from another island resident that there were several celebrities at the wedding. Jimmy Buffet was there and well as Carlie Simon. Doc Severson and his orchestra was the band. And they were all just a short distance away.

Yesterday we pulled anchor and motored down to Bells River, a protected anchorage off the coastal town of Fernandina Beach, FL.

The wind has been blowing up to 25 all day long but we did dingy in to the Memorial Day ceremony. While cruising the NOAA weather forecast is just that, a forecast. They were predicting 10-15 all day. Use you own senses are learn to read the weather.

It brought tears to our eyes as they read the name of all of the locals that have given their lives for this country. A wreath was dropped into the sea in honor of the dead.....RIP!

Lots of boat traffic today too. Grilled cedar-planked salmon for dinner tonight. Can't wait.

We'll pull the hook and head back to the marina in the morning.

Up and about early as usual this morning. We will be getting underway in a bit once the sun comes up; its already getting light out now. Light winds out of the NW at about 10 or so, will be blowing on our port quarter at the dock which should simplify the maneuver. Tides will be just turning to incoming.

It has been a lovey cruise.
